Peggy Carter refused to give up hope that Steve would return. She joined Howard Stark on his missions to find him and spent hours scouring over the little data they had. She kept her weekends on her calender open, just in case Steve returned for their dance date.

Twenty years passed, and Peggy was now in her early 40s. Howard was throwing a party, and she was sitting at a table when a man walked up and asked her to dance. He was war veteran who walked with a slight limp, but he didn’t let it bother him; he only wanted to dance. Hesitantly, Peggy said yes, and for the first night in twenty years, she didn’t think about Steve. One year later, John Coulson asked Peggy to marry him, and six months later they became husband and wife. They never expected to have children, so when Peggy realized she was pregnant, the couple was overjoyed. Phil Coulson never considered himself to be an only child. His mother told him stories of Captain America, and the hero became the older brother he never had.
